Celebrating 25 Years: A Conversation with Marc Pesse, Partner

Marc Pesse, Partner at Executive Insight

From exploration to finding purpose

When Marc graduated from the University of Lausanne, the path ahead wasn’t immediately clear. He joined a consulting company where he explored different industries like telecoms, technology, and car manufacturing – but something was missing. “I wanted to do something that had meaning and contributed to value in a positive way,” he recalls.

That clarity came when he began working in projects supporting pharmaceutical clients during his early consulting career.

“It was the first time I felt I could draw a line between my work and real societal impact: better health outcomes, lives saved. That gave purpose to the hard work.”

Marc joined Executive Insight in 2005, bringing with him experience and a clear vision of the kind of consulting environment he wanted to be part of.

“I knew I wouldn’t be happy in a traditional consulting path. The compromises to the route to Partner weren’t ones I was willing to make,” he says.

A conscious choice ...

Joining Executive Insight enabled Marc to become member of the Partnership rapidly, and gave him a sense of meaning.

“For many years, the financial incentive was not the most rewarding compared to other consulting companies. But I stayed here because I believed we could build something worthwile.”

... to build something meaningful

Marc chose to help build something different; a company where aspiration and people came first. “I didn’t found the company, but I’ve had the unique opportunity to shape its growth and future. That’s why I’m still here.”

Marc finds motivation not only in client impact, but in the company itself. “We’re not just helping clients. We’re providing meaningful jobs to around 70 people. That’s what keeps me going, even during challenging times.”

A defining test of values

One of the most pivotal moments in Marc’s journey came in 2008, when a business decision nearly jeopardized the company’s future. “We tried to diversify and develop a software, but it almost bankrupted us,” he shares candidly. Rather than shifting the burden onto employees, the Partners took responsibility. “We reduced our salaries for a year to preserve the team. We were honest about the situation, and we cared deeply about the people."

“You can talk about values all day. But the real test is whether you live them. That year, we did.”

Fairness and responsibility
Sometimes, true leadership requires sacrifice

Marc sees that moment as an inflection point. “Fairness is really important to me. Owning up to our responsibilities and preserving the team was the right thing to do."

"Looking back, we’re proud of that sacrifice. It helped shape what Executive Insight is today.”

Looking ahead:
Talent, transformation, and trust

Looking ahead: talent, transformation, and trust

Marc is energized by the team Executive Insight has built. “Everyone is of high caliber. I’m part of the recruiting team, and it’s exciting to see how people now want to be here. We used to have to ‘beg’ – and now we attract amazing talent.”

Marc also reflects on the future of the team built so far: “The number of people who can be part of the Leadership in the future is very strong and has never been stronger. This is exciting!”

He’s also aware of the challenges ahead. “The industry is evolving rapidly. Consolidation in the pharma services space and the rise of AI are driving structural change. Consulting in 5 years won’t look like it does today and our company will be different as a result.”

But Marc is confident in the company’s ability to adapt.

“It’s exciting, even if a bit scary. We have the creativity, energy and resilience to harness these changes and continue supporting our clients in significant ways.”
