Documenting barriers to access for a cell/gene therapy

Bottlenecks to Access_560x400.jpg

Goal

The initiative led by government affairs was triggered by unexpectedly low penetration rates of the therapy in multiple EU countries. The initiative aimed to assemble evidence on systemic access barriers leading to patient drop-off along the patient journey, to identify root causes of the barriers, and to initiate collaborations amongst healthcare stakeholders to co-develop solutions.

Approach

Analyze drop-off along patient journey & uncover barriers

We examined existing public and internal data to understand where patients are lost along the patient journey. We hypothesized different barriers that may exist at the points at which high numbers of patients were dropping out.

Identify systemic issues & root causes

We identified and validated the systemic issues with external stakeholders and identified several root causes along the patient journey across multiple countries.

Co-develop solutions & explore collaboration opportunities

After validating the root causes for the systemic issues, solutions ideas were discussed by the multi-stakeholder panel.

  • The initiative and collaborative approach was very well received by external stakeholders
  • Discussions with the multistakeholder panel initiated several follow-on activities and collaborations aiming to resolve the documented barriers
  • The methodology has been integrated in the client way of working and will be further rolled out
