A recent Forbes article suggested that pharmaceutical companies learn from IBM’s transformation in the 90ies. As the hardware market commoditised, IBM managed to shift from a product-centric culture to a customer and service centered company. Similarly, as the premium for medical innovation erodes ever more rapidly, differentiation and value add in the pharmaceutical sector will be increasingly created through services. Yet many questions remain:
- Can pharmaceutical companies create a viable business model that includes services?
- Are regulators, payers and customers ready for services beyond the pill?
- Will third parties emerge and offer combined product and services ahead of pharma?
